The next morning, the entire household was calm—except for Babah Lantana, who kept pacing back and forth, speaking her mind as was her habit whenever something upset her.
"How can someone bite my child just like that? And then another stranger comes into my house and beats up my boy? What kind of lack of freedom is this? Well, you’ve already made your judgment, so let me see what happens. You must pass a strict judgment because if you don’t…" She hissed in frustration.
"A clear path shows that something serious is about to happen!"
Even if Babah Lantana hadn’t spoken those words, I would still be uneasy because I was used to hearing her demand revenge—even if it took a year. And here I was, having bitten someone just yesterday, causing a serious reaction.
Asabe was lying down, suffering from a high fever, while Sallau hadn’t stopped screaming in pain. Eventually, Mallam Bahago was called to fix his dislocated shoulder.
Knowing that my father was still in the house kept me seated in my room. Seeing Asabe lying there, I was sure she wouldn't try to retaliate for the bite I gave her. But still, I watched as my father picked up his basket of tomatoes, preparing to leave.
I decided to slip out of the house too, since staying here would only bring trouble. Just as I was about to follow him, he suddenly said,
"Where are you going, Yaacuwuna?"
I quickly responded, "I’m right here, Baba." I knelt beside him.
"Don’t you dare leave this house," he commanded.
My heart sank.
"Did you hear me or not?"
"I heard you, Baba," I replied weakly.
I got up and returned to my room, trying to focus on my book, but my mind was elsewhere.

"Sallau!"
Sallau struggled to stand. "Yes, Baba?"
"Pack your things and leave my house. Go back to where you came from. Since you arrived, all you do is complain. As for that other one, I’ve sent word to his father—he should never step into my house again!"
He walked away without looking back.
Babah Lantana glared at him in disappointment. "So this is your decision?!" She hissed and turned to see Sallau, struggling to carry his bag as he painfully made his way out.
Suddenly, she shouted at him, "Where do you think you’re going in this condition?! Put that bag down and rest. You’re not leaving this house until you’ve avenged what was done to you!"
My stomach churned—I knew exactly what she meant.
Sallau returned to his room and lay down, while Babah Lantana went about her business, mumbling to herself.
Just then, a woman’s voice greeted us at the entrance of our compound.
To my surprise, Babah Lantana responded using a man’s name.
"Nalami, you’ve come all the way inside? Couldn’t you have waited at the door for permission to enter?"
The visitor laughed lightly before responding, "If you hadn’t let me in, I wouldn’t have considered you a true woman of honor. But I wouldn’t call you ‘Butulu’ (Ungrateful) either. Isn't that what people from your family call you?"
"Butulu? You even had the guts to come into my husband’s house and disrespect me?"
The visitor quickly replied, "Oh no, not at all! Marriage carries its own honor. No matter how reckless someone is, once they are under the shade of marriage, they become respectable. So, I wouldn’t dare disrespect you in your husband's house."
"Good. Since you’ve said that yourself, let’s talk outside."
"No," the visitor replied. "I will sit right here. I won’t enter your room, so don’t think I’ll lie on your bed. If your husband walks in, I’ll simply adjust my sitting position and act like your younger brother. But if you try to act tough with me, remember—I’m still your father here."

As Babah Lantana brought out a mat for him to sit on, my mind raced. Who exactly was this man?
I moved closer to take a look. He was wearing a flowing robe and a traditional cap, but his words were something else entirely.
"So there are even proper seats here?" He smirked.
Then, to my horror, he suddenly reached out and smacked Babah Lantana’s backside.
My heart pounded.
She quickly frowned and scolded him. "Nalami, you have no shame!"
He adjusted his posture.
