Aliyu didn’t say anything to her but sped up so much that she thought they’d take off into the sky. Her anxiety spiked, but she couldn’t bring herself to say anything out of fear. At last, with a trembling voice, she managed to ask, “Aliyu, where are you taking me, please?”

He hit the brakes and stared at her with a threatening look, “What did you say?”

She lowered her head, too scared to respond. He gave her a harsh glare and said, “I’m taking you to be sold off.”

She didn’t lift her head or reply, which made him scoff as he resumed driving. Her nerves only settled once she noticed they were back in their neighborhood. When he parked the car, she opened the door quickly, attempting to flee, but he grabbed her arm and scolded, “Didn’t I tell you something? And I don’t want to see those tears on your face.”

She yanked her arm away and stepped out of the car, casting him an angry glare and muttering, “I didn’t hear you,” before dashing into the house. He followed her closely. Reaching the gate, she stumbled and almost fell, but he caught her. She looked at him fearfully and pleaded, “Please, I’m sorry; I didn’t mean it.”

Without responding, he pulled her along like a lifeless doll until they entered Abba’s living room. Once inside, he turned to her and sternly warned, “You’d better obey what I told you, or I’ll make you regret it tonight.” She didn’t reply, and he dragged her further into the living room, where Abba was sitting, remote in hand, switching channels.

Aliyu managed to say hello, and she quietly followed suit, although she was too anxious to speak up. Aliyu greeted Abba and then said, “Here she is, Abba. I’ve brought her.”

Abba ignored him and turned to her, speaking calmly, “I have just one question, Fateemah, and I need you to be honest. Don’t lie to me—I don’t want you to lie.”

Her heart pounded as she looked down, fearing to meet Abba’s gaze. After a pause, he asked, “Did you agree to Aliyu’s marriage to another woman?”

Her world froze, and she felt her chest tighten. Tears threatened to escape her eyes. Aliyu subtly held her hand in a hidden gesture of reassurance, reminding her of his expectations. Abba’s voice broke through the silence, “Fateema, are you quiet because you’re lying?”

With difficulty, she murmured, “Yes, Abba, I agreed.”

Abba shook his head and said, “You’re lying.” She tried to stifle her tears, saying, “It’s true, Abba. I’m the one who told him to go ahead.”

Abba stared at them both in silence before finally saying, “Very well. I won’t stop you from taking another wife, Aliyu, but make sure my daughter completes her education and is secure before you proceed, or I’ll end everything myself. Now, leave my sight.”

Without further reaction, Aliyu stood up, thanked Abba, and glanced at her with a severe look before leaving the room.

After he left, Abba spoke to her gently, “I’m sorry, Fateema. I regret arranging this marriage with Aliyu. I can’t stop him from marrying again, and I won’t ask you to leave him, but if you find it impossible to stay with him, I’ll welcome you home anytime.”

She nodded, her eyes filled with tears, grateful for Abba’s understanding words. Afterward, she left, lost in thought.

Safeenah said, "I think I saw someone in that room." Hajiya was silent, looking toward the room, then moved closer to the bathroom, turned the handle, and found it locked. She looked at Safeenah and said, "It's locked." Safeenah came closer, tried the handle, and found it locked too. She leaned in to listen for any sound, and Hajiya asked, "Where is Aliyu? I haven't seen him." Meanwhile, Aliyu was intently staring at the door, and Inteesar was nervously wringing her hands, tears streaming down her cheeks as she stomped her foot lightly on the floor. She knew she'd never stop being scared of Hajiya.

Safeenah said, "Let me go check if his key is like the one to his room; I'll get his key." Inteesar, afraid, grabbed him, saying, "Oh no, help me, Father!" Her body trembled, and he snapped, "I'll slap you if you don't be quiet." She covered her mouth with her hand, trembling. Meanwhile, Hajiya was opening drawers in the room, searching furiously until Safeenah came back holding the key. Hajiya asked, "Did you get it?" Safeenah replied, "Yes, it’s the same type. Let's open it—maybe the troublemaker is inside."

Inteesar held onto his hand, her face drenched in tears, whispering in a trembling voice, "Aliyu, please, I need to use the bathroom." He pulled her closer, looking at her intently as he started to unzip her skirt. She quickly held her skirt, wide-eyed. He glared at her and, in a low voice, said, "That's not what you need." She shook her head and then nodded quickly, as if in panic. He fully unzipped her skirt; she grasped his hand, her eyes wide with fright, as she heard Safeenah trying to insert the key into the door. Hugging him in tears, she said, "Aliyu, they’ll hurt me; I'm so scared." He replied calmly, "It’d be better if they did. I might even open the door myself if they can't manage it."

She shook her head, terrified, and pleaded, "No, please, just take me to my father's house today; he said I should come back." Safeenah was still trying to open the door with Hajiya’s help, while Aliyu watched her skirt slip down her body and fall to the bathroom floor. He fixed his eyes on her exposed legs, and seeing his intense stare, she knelt down quickly, saying, "Oh no." He lifted her up, his demeanor changing immediately as she whispered, "Help me, Father…"

Softly, almost as if intoxicated, he whispered, "They won’t be able to open it without the right key…" Before he finished, he started kissing her fervently as if to consume her. She pushed him away forcefully, and they both stumbled to the ground. In her terror, she screamed loudly, her body shaking.

Safeenah turned quickly to Hajiya and said, "Didn't I tell you she was in there?" Hajiya began banging on the door furiously, shouting, "Get out of this house before I kill you, you shameless troublemaker! This house is beyond you, I swear!" In tears, not even prepared to respond, she whispered, "I'm sorry, Mommy, I will…"

Inteesar tried to walk back to her room, but he quickly held her back, covering her mouth as he led her to his bedroom. He closed the door and leaned against it, giving her an intense look. She said, "What is this? Let me go out," but he responded, "Today, I want you to fulfill my rights." Her eyes widened, and she said, "What rights?" He replied, "Let me show you." She took a step back in fear, saying, "I swear, I'll scream if you don't open the door," but he glared at her and said, "Go ahead." She shook her head as if about to cry, saying, "Please, let me go—I need to make tea for Inna." He smiled, watching her; she was dressed in a light, sky-blue nightgown that reached her knees, with short sleeves, and her hair was tucked into a net. He closed his eyes and said, "Fulfill my rights first, then you can go make tea for her in the whole kitchen." She started to speak, but he lifted her as if she were a baby, placing her on the bed. She was terrified, and with a tearful voice, she said, "Please, Aliyu, stop—I don't know what you mean." He took off his jalabiya and set it aside, saying, "I'll show you exactly what I mean." She tried to climb down from the bed, but he held her back, and she cried out, "Oh no!" He began to kiss her while holding her close. She struggled, crying even harder, as it became clear he was serious.

They suddenly heard Inna open the door to Inteesar's room, complaining, "I've been waiting for tea all this time!" Inna held her cheek, saying, "I bet she’s with her husband." Then she went outside, found the gatekeeper, and said, "Did the master of the house return?" He barely replied, "Yes." She added, "That girl has run off with her husband and left me alone." After making her own tea, she returned to her room, saying, "What a two-faced person!"

Back in Aliyu’s room, Inteesar whispered in tears, "For God's sake, let me go and do what she asked." Aliyu, barely listening, seemed lost in a different world. As he started removing her clothes, she clung to him, trembling, pleading, "Please, Aliyu, have mercy on me—I'm scared." He shook his head with difficulty, saying, "Please, Fatima, have mercy on me too." She kept pushing him away, crying, "I'm scared; please stop." He lay beside her, breathing heavily, and, feeling her trying to get down from the bed, he pulled her back into his embrace. She continued sobbing, saying, "Please, Aliyu, have mercy and stop." He eventually reassured her, "I won’t hurt you," though this didn’t calm her, and she continued crying. He held her in his arms, eyes closed, until she eventually fell asleep.

After she drifted off, he covered her with a blanket, went to the other side of the bed, and lay down, exhausted and restless. Still unable to sleep, he went to the living room in the middle of the night, drank some lime juice, and finally lay down.

In the morning, Aliyu sat up abruptly when he felt cold water splashed on him by Inna, who said, "Just wanted to make sure you know I'm here." He clicked his tongue, got up, and went upstairs, leaving her standing there laughing.

Entering his room, he found Inteesar freshly out of the shower, wrapped in his towel. She didn't want him to see her in his room, and she planned to slip back to her room unnoticed. He walked past her without a word, into the bathroom, but then returned quickly, picking up her nightdress and hair net and throwing them into the washing machine, closing the bathroom door. She watched him, feeling like screaming, knowing he was just teasing her.

Returning to her room, she found Inna sitting on the prayer mat, holding her prayer beads with the TV on in the background. Mortified, Inteesar greeted her, and Inna looked at her disapprovingly, saying, "I didn't realize how shameless you are, Inteesar. You went off to your husband's room for the whole night instead of bringing me tea, then came back to me wrapped in a towel." Inteesar glared at her and said, "Old lady, what business do you have if I go to my husband?" Inna opened her mouth in shock as Inteesar took off the towel, wrapping herself in a shawl. Inna said, "If it weren't for the late hour last night, I would've left this house."

Later, when Aliyu entered the kitchen and saw her making breakfast for Inna, he said, "You didn’t greet anyone this morning? Didn't they teach you to greet your elders at home?" She shrugged without even looking at him, making him consider saying something else, but he stopped. He said, "Tomorrow, they'll come to measure you for my new bride’s wedding band, and she wants your room, so I want you to start moving your things to another room." She laughed without saying anything.
